How do you design an assessment to obtain vaild inferences about essential learning outcomes?

Join us for a day about crafting questions to assess student learning, the use of Depth of Knowledge (DoK), and other factors as we evaluate a variety of assessment items, including multiple choice, open response, and performance tasks and assessment items. You can expect to enhance your assessment literacy and take back concrete strategies for writing assessment questions that do what you intend them to do.

We use questions and prompts to probe students’ understanding – and then use their responses to make inferences about what they know and can do. These inferences may inform lesson development, differentiated instruction, or summative assessment scores. But only well-crafted questions can yield the evidence we want.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Enhance assessment literacy

  • Understand assessment design to obtain reliable inferences about essential learning outcomes

  • Refine item writing and item evaluation skills

  • Avoid common issues in assessment item construction

  • Recognize best practices in item writing/assessment prompt writing

  • Learn about Universal Design and bias and sensitivity issues, as relates to assessment

Director of WebbAlign, Wisconsin Center for Educational Products and Services

Sara Christopherson has extensive experience with both classroom-level and high-stakes assessments and has worked broadly with assessment developers and educational publishers. She is a member of the CCSSO’s State Collaboratives on Assessment and Student Standards (SCASS) and has participated in evaluative studies of assessment for at least 20 states.

Depth of Knowledge (DoK) was developed by Dr. Norman Webb in response to a need for a language system that would best fit the challenges of describing the content complexity of learning objectives and assessment items. Sara began working with Dr. Webb on alignment studies in 2006 at UW-Madison and began directing WebbAlign in partnership with Dr. Webb in 2013.

WASCD has partnered with WCEPS (Wisconsin Center for Education Products and Services) for the last few years, working with school district teams to provide Wisconsin educators with training in DoK and assessment.
