How do you design an assess­ment to obtain vaild infer­ences about essen­tial learn­ing outcomes?

Join us for a day about craft­ing ques­tions to assess stu­dent learn­ing, the use of Depth of Knowl­edge (DoK), and other fac­tors as we eval­u­ate a vari­ety of assess­ment items, includ­ing mul­ti­ple choice, open response, and per­for­mance tasks and assess­ment items. You can expect to enhance your assess­ment lit­er­acy and take back con­crete strate­gies for writ­ing assess­ment ques­tions that do what you intend them to do.

We use ques­tions and prompts to probe stu­dents’ under­stand­ing – and then use their responses to make infer­ences about what they know and can do. These infer­ences may inform les­son devel­op­ment, dif­fer­en­ti­ated instruc­tion, or sum­ma­tive assess­ment scores. But only well-​crafted ques­tions can yield the evi­dence we want.

Who Should Attend

A dis­trict team with at least one admin­is­tra­tor is opti­mal. This work­shop is appro­pri­ate for teach­ers, prin­ci­pals, dis­trict assess­ment coor­di­na­tors, direc­tors of instruc­tion, team lead­ers, instruc­tional coaches and con­tent area coordinators/​specialists.

Sara Christo­pher­son has exten­sive expe­ri­ence with both classroom-​level and high-​stakes assess­ments and has worked broadly with assess­ment devel­op­ers and edu­ca­tional pub­lish­ers. She is a mem­ber of the CCSSO’s State Col­lab­o­ra­tives on Assess­ment and Stu­dent Stan­dards (SCASS) and has par­tic­i­pated in eval­u­a­tive stud­ies of assess­ment for at least 20 states.

Depth of Knowl­edge (DoK) was devel­oped by Dr. Nor­man Webb in response to a need for a lan­guage sys­tem that would best fit the chal­lenges of describ­ing the con­tent com­plex­ity of learn­ing objec­tives and assess­ment items. Sara began work­ing with Dr. Webb on align­ment stud­ies in 2006 at UW-​Madison and began direct­ing WebbAlign in part­ner­ship with Dr. Webb in 2013.

WASCD has part­nered with WCEPS (Wis­con­sin Cen­ter for Edu­ca­tion Prod­ucts and Ser­vices) for the last few years, work­ing with school dis­trict teams to pro­vide Wis­con­sin edu­ca­tors with train­ing in DoK and assessment.

Reg­is­tra­tion Terms: Reg­is­tra­tions are accepted on a full pay­ment, first-​come, first-​served basis only. Con­fir­ma­tions are e-​mailed approx­i­mately one week before the pro­gram. Please call the WASCD office before the pro­gram if you did not receive a con­fir­ma­tion to deter­mine your reg­is­tra­tion sta­tus. For all can­cel­la­tions, there is a $25 pro­cess­ing fee. There are no refunds 3 days prior to or after the pro­gram. No charge for substitutes.

On-​Site Reg­is­tra­tion: When space is avail­able, you may reg­is­ter on site for an addi­tional $25 fee. Can­cel­la­tion Pol­icy: WASCD reserves the right to move or can­cel meet­ings because of low reg­is­tra­tion. That is why it is impor­tant to reg­is­ter early. In the unlikely event of a can­cel­la­tion, all reg­is­trants will be noti­fied and will receive full refunds.
