Back by pop­u­lar demand, Kristin Souers and Pete Hall, authors of the the ASCD books Fos­ter­ing Resilient Learn­ers: Strate­gies for Cre­at­ing a Trauma Sen­si­tive Class­room and Rela­tion­ship, Respon­si­bil­ity, and Reg­u­la­tion: Trauma-​Invested Prac­tices for Fos­ter­ing Resilient Learn­ers. This 3-​part series explores an urgent and grow­ing issue — child­hood trauma — and its pro­found effect on learn­ing and teach­ing. Kris­ten, a men­tal health coun­selor, and Pete, a for­mer prin­ci­pal, will share prac­ti­cal easy-​to-​implement strate­gies to help stu­dents liv­ing with trauma thrive in the classroom.

Day 1: Trauma is a word, not a sentence.

Child­hood trauma is real, and it is more preva­lent than we might believe. In this engag­ing, rel­e­vant, and prac­ti­cal ses­sion, learn from child­hood trauma expert Kristin Souers and for­mer prin­ci­pal Pete Hall (authors of the best-​selling and award-​winning Fos­ter­ing Resilient Learn­ers: Strate­gies for cre­at­ing a trauma-​sensitive class­room – ASCD, 2016) about the impor­tance of imple­ment­ing trauma-​invested prac­tices in the school set­ting. “Incor­po­rat­ing research, build­ing a com­mon vocab­u­lary, and explor­ing the impact of stress on brain devel­op­ment begins our explo­ration. And because we’re in a service-​oriented pro­fes­sion and con­tin­u­ously look out­ward to help oth­ers, we’ll turn our lenses around to build self-​awareness, inves­ti­gate the power of rela­tion­ships, exam­ine our belief sys­tems, and embrace the con­cept of grace as we col­lab­o­ra­tively build a cul­ture of safety for our stu­dents, fam­i­lies, staffs, and com­mu­ni­ties. If we’re going to be good to oth­ers, first and fore­most we’ve got to be good to our­selves. This ses­sion is rich with strate­gies and approaches to do just that…so we can fos­ter resilient learn­ers,” explained Pete Hall.

Day 1 Learn­ing Outcomes

  • Par­tic­i­pants will deepen their under­stand­ing of the preva­lence of child­hood trauma and the impact of trauma and toxic stress on learn­ing and development.

  • Par­tic­i­pants will embrace the need to build self-​awareness and tend to their self-​care in order to be primed and ready to effec­tively sup­port their stu­dents and children.

Day 2: A culture of safety and the new 3 R's 

In this con­tin­u­ing explo­ration of Trauma Invested prac­tices, Kristin and Pete share keen insights into the prac­tices of empa­thy and attune­ment and dis­cuss a com­mu­ni­ca­tion strat­egy built to strengthen con­nec­tion and under­stand­ing. Learn the char­ac­ter­is­tics of a cul­ture of safety, and imple­ment timely inter­ven­tions for our stu­dents by address­ing the “New 3 R’s” in edu­ca­tion: Rela­tion­ships, Respon­si­bil­ity, and Reg­u­la­tion. Using sce­nar­ios, research, and a bank of strate­gies, col­lab­o­rate with your col­leagues to brain­storm approaches to meet our stu­dents’ needs. Atten­dees will leave refreshed and excited about meet­ing the chal­lenges await­ing them, with tools in their tool­belt and the energy and opti­mism needed to use them!

Day 2 Learn­ing Outcomes

  • Par­tic­i­pants will deepen their under­stand­ing of the value of fos­ter­ing a safe, pre­dictable, and con­sis­tent learn­ing envi­ron­ment – one that is #TraumaInvested.

  • Par­tic­i­pants will be intro­duced to the new 3 R’s – an inter­ven­tion model packed full of mul­ti­ple strate­gies for edu­ca­tion staff and com­mu­nity mem­bers to uti­lize with chil­dren and staff with (known and unknown) trauma his­to­ries – help­ing to sus­tain learning-​ready (and teaching-​ready) states.

Day 3: Leadership in a #TraumaInvested setting

With lead­er­ship teams and rep­re­sen­ta­tives from your dis­trict, school, and/​or depart­ment, this ses­sion allows par­tic­i­pants to deepen their learn­ing and hone their col­lec­tive focus. Par­tic­i­pants will reflect on their per­sonal mis­sions as they ana­lyze WHY they do what they do. Then, using pow­er­ful sce­nar­ios, teams will col­lab­o­rate on a proven, replic­a­ble model for iden­ti­fy­ing stu­dent needs, build­ing empa­thy, and gen­er­at­ing strate­gies for sup­port­ing healthy adult and stu­dent growth. Fol­low­ing the prin­ci­ples of adult learn­ing, teams will fin­ish by con­struct­ing a plan to lead the sus­tain­able imple­men­ta­tion of #Trau­maIn­vested prac­tices in a focused, inte­gra­tive man­ner through­out their pro­fes­sional setting.

Day 3 Learn­ing Outcomes

  • Par­tic­i­pants will deepen their under­stand­ing of what it means to cre­ate a Pos­i­tive, #Trau­maIn­vested Learn­ing Environment.

  • Par­tic­i­pants will roll up their sleeves and build a strate­gic, real­is­tic, inten­tional plan to become more #Trau­maIn­vested in their practices.

  • Par­tic­i­pants will col­lab­o­rate and refine their plans to imple­ment #Trau­maIn­vested approaches and mind­sets in their build­ings in order to sup­port adults and their stu­dents in a strengths-​based manner.

For over two decades, Kristin Souers has ded­i­cated her­self to the improve­ment of people’s lives. As a licensed men­tal health coun­selor, she has pro­vided coun­sel­ing ser­vices to indi­vid­u­als, cou­ples, and fam­i­lies. With a his­tory of work­ing in the fields of early learn­ing, law enforce­ment, edu­ca­tion, and men­tal health, she has been able to develop an exten­sive knowl­edge base. This, part­nered with her exper­tise in com­plex trauma, the impact of vio­lence, cri­sis man­age­ment, coun­sel­ing, and trauma-​informed care, has allowed her to part­ner with pro­fes­sion­als around the devel­op­ment of trauma-​informed prac­tices in a mul­ti­tude of settings.

As an inde­pen­dent con­sul­tant, an adjunct fac­ulty mem­ber at the Gon­zaga Uni­ver­sity School of Edu­ca­tion in the Coun­selor Edu­ca­tion Depart­ment, Kristin now pro­vides crit­i­cal pro­fes­sional devel­op­ment, con­sul­ta­tion, edu­ca­tion, and train­ing ser­vices to schools, school dis­tricts, and orga­ni­za­tions through­out the coun­try. She has pre­sented to hun­dreds of audi­ences, facil­i­tated group learn­ing, super­vised intern­ships, directed pro­grams, and sup­ported the learn­ing and growth of count­less edu­ca­tors, care­giv­ing pro­fes­sion­als, and other individuals.

The award-​winning pub­li­ca­tion, Fostering Resilient Learners: Strategies for Creating a Trauma-Sensitive Classroom (ASCD, 2016), and many arti­cles pub­lished in edu­ca­tion jour­nals includ­ing, “Address Trauma with Calm, Consistent Care: Strategies to Help Educators Avoid Burnout While Keeping Students Learning-Ready” (Prin­ci­pal Mag­a­zine, March/​April 2015) and her most recent pub­li­ca­tion, “Respond­ing to Stu­dent Need ver­sus Behav­ior” (Decem­ber 2016) have strength­ened Kristin’s impact in education.

After a teach­ing career that spanned preK-​8 over three states, Mr. Hall served 12 years as a prin­ci­pal in three Title I schools: Ander­son Ele­men­tary in the Washoe County (Reno, NV) School Dis­trict, and Sheri­dan Ele­men­tary and Shaw Mid­dle in the Spokane (WA) Pub­lic Schools. Under his lead­er­ship, Ander­son ES was the only Title I school in the State of Nevada to earn “High Achiev­ing” des­ig­na­tion; Sheri­dan ES earned acco­lades from the Wash­ing­ton State Office of the Super­in­ten­dent for its growth and achieve­ment, and Shaw MS earned a Career & Life Readi­ness Award from the State of Washington.

Mr. Hall’s writ­ten works include author­ing over a dozen arti­cles on lead­er­ship and pub­lish­ing six books, The First-​Year Prin­ci­pal (Scare­crow Edu­ca­tion, 2004), Building Teachers' Capacity for Success: A collaborative guide for coaches and school leaders (ASCD, 2008), Lead On! Motivational lessons for school leaders (Eye On Edu­ca­tion, 2011) Teach, Reflect, Learn: Building your capacity for success in the classroom (ASCD, 2015), Fostering Resilient Learners: Strategies for creating a trauma-sensitive classroom (ASCD, 2016), and The Principal Influence: A framework for building principals’ leadership capacity (ASCD, 2016).

For his tena­cious and coura­geous lead­er­ship, Mr. Hall has been hon­ored with ASCD’s Out­stand­ing Young Edu­ca­tor Award (2004), Nevada’s Mar­tin Luther King Jr Award (2005), and Phi Delta Kappan’s Emerg­ing Lead­ers Award (2009), among oth­ers. He was appointed to the Governor’s Com­mis­sion on Excel­lence in Edu­ca­tion (in Nevada, 2005) and was selected to sit on the National Edu­ca­tion Association’s Great Pub­lic Schools Indi­ca­tors Advi­sory Panel (20102011). He holds a National Prin­ci­pal Men­tor Cer­tifi­cate from NAESP and serves as a trainer and coach for NAESP’s PALS men­tor­ing pro­gram. He also pro­vides exten­sive pro­fes­sional devel­op­ment ser­vices as an ASCD Fac­ulty mem­ber. Mr. Hall has worked as a per­sonal consultant/​mentor/​motivational coach for school lead­ers, teach­ers, pro­fes­sional ath­letes, week­end golfers, stand-​up come­di­ans, fire­fight­ers, busi­ness exec­u­tives, cus­to­di­ans, and more. A cur­rent res­i­dent of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, he speaks and con­sults internationally.
