PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports)

What We Know Now

Description:

PBIS is a systemic approach to addressing student behavior in the school environment through whole school, small group and individual positive evidenced-based practices to teach and reinforce positive behaviors as part of a whole system of Response to Intervention.

Context:

The focus of PBIS is to ensure a safe, engaging culture of high expectations for behavior and student academic success. Wisconsin’s approach to PBIS ”applies evidence-based programs, practices and strategies for all students to increase academic performance, improve safety, decrease problem behavior, and establish a positive school culture. Schools implementing PBIS build on existing strengths, complementing and organizing current programming and strategies. The PBIS model has been successfully implemented in thousands of schools in over 40 states, resulting in dramatic reductions in disciplinary interventions and increases in academic achievement”. (Wisconsin PBIS Network)

Considerations or implications:

PBIS has grounded their approach in the foundations of nationwide research based strategies with previous success from many other states, particularly Illinois. At the state level it encourages districts and schools to implement PBIS with fidelity at each of the three levels through a strong professional development approach with explicit coaching at the school and district level (i.e. internal and external coaches). This model has helped hundreds of schools across the state implement PBIS and show data of success.

Resources:

The Wisconsin PBIS Network http://www.wisconsinpbisnetwork.orgis the link between the Department of Public Instruction and the school districts implementing PBIS across the state. It is a very prescribed and successful model which trains school leadership teams and administrators each step of the way. The significant difference that has contributed to the success of so many schools is the expectation for fidelity to implementation tools and strategies. These can be found at the Wisconsin PBIS Network website as well as many nationally recognized sites for PBIS.
