What We Know Now


PBIS is a sys­temic approach to address­ing stu­dent behav­ior in the school envi­ron­ment through whole school, small group and indi­vid­ual pos­i­tive evidenced-​based prac­tices to teach and rein­force pos­i­tive behav­iors as part of a whole sys­tem of Response to Intervention.


The focus of PBIS is to ensure a safe, engag­ing cul­ture of high expec­ta­tions for behav­ior and stu­dent aca­d­e­mic suc­cess. Wisconsin’s approach to PBIS ”applies evidence-​based pro­grams, prac­tices and strate­gies for all stu­dents to increase aca­d­e­mic per­for­mance, improve safety, decrease prob­lem behav­ior, and estab­lish a pos­i­tive school cul­ture. Schools imple­ment­ing PBIS build on exist­ing strengths, com­ple­ment­ing and orga­niz­ing cur­rent pro­gram­ming and strate­gies. The PBIS model has been suc­cess­fully imple­mented in thou­sands of schools in over 40 states, result­ing in dra­matic reduc­tions in dis­ci­pli­nary inter­ven­tions and increases in aca­d­e­mic achieve­ment”. Considerations or implications:

PBIS has grounded their approach in the foun­da­tions of nation­wide research based strate­gies with pre­vi­ous suc­cess from many other states, par­tic­u­larly Illi­nois. At the state level it encour­ages dis­tricts and schools to imple­ment PBIS with fidelity at each of the three lev­els through a strong pro­fes­sional devel­op­ment approach with explicit coach­ing at the school and dis­trict level (i.e. inter­nal and exter­nal coaches). This model has helped hun­dreds of schools across the state imple­ment PBIS and show data of success.


The Wis­con­sin PBIS Net­work http://www.wisconsinpbisnetwork.orgis the link between the Depart­ment of Pub­lic Instruc­tion and the school dis­tricts imple­ment­ing PBIS across the state. It is a very pre­scribed and suc­cess­ful model which trains school lead­er­ship teams and admin­is­tra­tors each step of the way. The sig­nif­i­cant dif­fer­ence that has con­tributed to the suc­cess of so many schools is the expec­ta­tion for fidelity to imple­men­ta­tion tools and strate­gies.
