Tony Frontier, PhD, is co-author of Effective Supervision: Supporting the Art and Science of Teaching  (ASCD, 2011) with Robert Marzano and David Livingston. He is a past president of WASCD, and is currently the Director of Teacher Education at Cardinal Stritch University.

How can we connect the Common Core to classroom practice?

Utilizing Robert Marzano’s Art and Science of Teaching framework (ASCD, 2007), this two-day workshop helps teachers, curriculum developers, and principals connect the Common Core to effective instructional practice.

The two-day workshop format allows participants to learn a comprehensive model of effective instruction, try various strategies between the two sessions, share their learning and ask follow-up questions as they implement strategies and engage in deliberate practice.

Participants in this two-day workshop will learn:

  • How to translate the Common Core standards into learning goals for students in a manner that allows teachers to guide curriculum and instruction, track student progress, and celebrate student success.
  • The three types of lesson segments used in effective instruction and how to utilize those segments in a manner that results in increased student learning of the Common Core Standards.
  • How three different types of lessons that deal with content must be utilized to move students to the higher-level critical thinking and analysis skills that are expected of student performance as related to the Common Core.
  • Dozens of research-based instructional strategies that challenge and support students to think critically, engage students in their learning, and ensure high expectations for all learners, including reluctant learners.

Take advantage of this program to train leaders in your district to address the Common Core Standards and achieve a comprehensive model integrating curriculum, instruction and assessment.

Who should attend?

  • Teachers interested in learning a range of instructional strategies to improve student learning of the skills and content described in the Common Core Standards.
  • Administrators interested in learning a model of effective instruction or who may be considering using the Art and Science model as a framework for supervision and evaluation.
  • Curriculum direc tors interested in learning a range of new strategies to help all learners.
  • Leaders in the area of curriculum, instruction and assessment who may support colleagues through team teaching or providing professional development.

Schools will benefit from sending any staff member interested in improving understanding of effective instruction and increasing his or her instructional repertoire. Schools should consider sending a team of teachers interested in new levels of team learning and collaboration around effective practice.

Rick Wormeli offers a wealth of experience having worked as a middle grades teacher and staff development educator. He is also an educational consultant to National Public Radio, USA Today, and the Smithsonian Institute. Rick has presented at the White House, has appeared on Good Morning America, and has worked with school districts all across the country.

Shift your instruction from an emphasis on teaching to an emphasis on learning.  Send a team to learn from the expert, Rick Wormeli.  Teachers get ideas and tools that can be easily implemented and shared in schools and classrooms.  Administrators gain insight into strategies that can be communicated to staff and aligned to the curriculum.

Differentiated instruction responds to student needs.   This workshop will help participants better understand differentiation.  Participants will learn about tools and practices that have the potential of making a difference in the classroom.

We know Wisconsin educators are keenly interested in improving student achievement.  This interactive workshop highlights several strategies that can help teachers determine what students know, what they need to know and how best to make effective instructional decisions.

What is differentiated instruction?

The first thing that comes to mind when defining differentiated instruction is understanding that it is maximizing the learning that can happen over what traditionally happens with "one size fits all" lessons. At any point when you're choosing to maximize what students learn, as opposed to settling for what they can learn, that is indicative of a differentiated class.

Participants will:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of differentiated instruction.
  • Learn the structure and components of differentiated instruction.
  • Engage in techniques and view examples of a variety of practices and levels.
  • Discover a variety of ways to collect data to inform instruction.
  • Ensure that teachers are making informed decisions
  • Engage in activities that will differetiate instruction.
  • Make certain that students know their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Build a repertoire of practices that encourage a variety of ways to collect data to inform instruction.
  • Expand your understanding, use and create differentiated lessons.
  • Learn how formative assessment supports differentiated instruction.

This program includes continental breakfast.

Registrations are accepted on a full-payment, first-come, first-served basis only. There is a $25 processing fee for all cancellations. No refunds 3 days prior to or after the program.  There is no charge for substitutes.

WASCD reserves the right to move or cancel meetings because of low registration.  In the unlikely event of a cancellation, all registrants will be notified and receive a full refund.

Participants are responsible for their own lodging.  A special rate of $70 per night is available at the Best Western Plover if you book before Mar. 1, 2012.
