Pete Hall - Leading for Resilience: Every day, a little bit stronger
Times are tough, and there's no disputing that. Educators are not immune to the challenges, stressors, demands, and risks of teaching and leading in a highly-charged, pandemic-altered, heavily politicized environment. How do we handle this new reality, so we can thrive and not just survive? In this uplifting, honest session, join Pete Hall (a good friend of Wisconsin ASCD and the author of a dozen books, including newly-released Always Strive to Be a Better You: How ordinary people can live extraordinary lives) and explore the biology of stress, embrace two big strategies we can implement to support healthy working environments ("authenticity" and "reframing"), and learn 10 things our brains need in order to function at their best all day, every day. Then delve into the world of continuous improvement and discuss a handful of leadership approaches to ensure our efforts toward building resilience are consistently discussed, practiced, and refined. We cannot solve all the world's problems, but we can build a) our own individual resilience and b) our collective resilience to ensure our students get the best of us. After all, it's our duty and obligation to be primed and ready for every child, every day.

*Registration for the pre-conference includes a complimentary text from Pete Hall! You will receive one of the titles below:

Time for Change: Dealing With Rational Resistors - Dr. Luis Cruz (General Session Room)

Dr. Cruz - Author, Consultant, Celebrated Educator & Administrator, Author
Dr. Cruz will share information and strategies to support transformational leadership. The information is based on the book he co-authored with Anthony Muhammad. As we are in pursuit of high levels of learning for all students, there is bound to be some resistance. Why? How can teacher and school leaders overcome this. Find out! Specifically, this breakout session focuses on the task of how to overcome rational, who are the most common, resistors to change.

The Neuroscience Behind Our Students' Behaviors and Bettering Our Understanding of What They Need - Edward J Jedlicka PhD, LPC, BCN, Psychotherapist (Breakout Room 1)

Dr. Jedlicka has worked as a teacher, school counselor and is an educational psychologist providing neurotherapy in a clinical setting at Doll & Associates. He works in collaboration with a charter school in designing spaces aligned for kids. He has done extensive research on autism and anxiety and can provide practical solutions and feedback for educators in better understanding the unique needs of our students. We will take a look at what neuroscience and what it is telling us about what students need. You will walk away with knowledge on polyvagal theory and the window of tolerance affects a child’s behaviors as well as brain development and managing emotions.

Teaching With Clarity - Dr. Tony Frontier (Breakout Room 5)

Dr. Tony Frontier, Cardinal Stritch University & Author

If doing more in our schools and classrooms were the answer to better meeting the needs of every child, then we’d have met every goal and closed every gap by now. We don’t need more activities, resources, initiatives, projects, or meetings. We need more clarity. Clarity emerges when we prioritize our efforts to do less with greater focus. With this focus, we empower our students to prioritize their strategy and efforts to develop deep understanding of the most important skills and content. Drawing from the book 'Teaching With Clarity: How to Prioritize and Do Less So Students Understand More' the book's author will explain a practical framework and action steps that can be used to prioritize, and align, teachers' and students' strategic efforts to support responsive learning in every classroom. Participants will learn:

· The critical distinction between empathetic vs. sympathetic lesson and curriculum design and the effect of each approach on students.

· The three components that must be established to successfully pursue equity initiatives that empower teachers and learners.

· The three priority statements that align administrators', teachers', and students' efforts to support effective teaching, avoid initiative fatigue, and ensure responsive learning for each student.

· The six elements present in systems and classrooms that choose clarity for teaching and learning.

Practical examples from classrooms and schools, action steps, and useful templates for prioritizing and planning will be shared.

Rob Meyer, Director of Teaching & Learning for the Beaver Dam Unified School District and Wisconsin ASCD President

This session will focus on a process to design classroom-based assessments that provide necessary information for adults and for students. Dr. Anthony Muhammad refers to assessment as the lynchpin in the PLC and RtI process. Rob could not agree more! Without a quality assessment, we can not determine student needs for intervention or extension. In addition, we can't use the assessment to determine our needs to grow as educators. This is a process you will be able to share back at your sites.

Closing Keynote: Dr. Rainey Briggs
Every Kid, Every Day, Whatever It Takes

For many kids school just happens to be that place that they call home and for the majority of students they are wondering how they will fit in, or do my teacher care about me, or do I even belong here in the school environment, or why is school so boring. Rest easy as you attend this keynote presentation as Dr. Rainey Briggs brings meaning to “Every Kid, Every Day, Whatever It Takes” by sharing lived experiences and challenging each and every one of you to reflect on what “Every Kid, Every Day, Whatever It Takes” means to you. Participants will walk away with what they believe, value, and stand for as they participate in this closing keynote address based on “Every Kid, Every Day, Whatever It Takes” through the lens of Social Change.

Listed as one of the 48 Most Influential Black People in the state of Wisconsin 2021, Rainey Briggs is a dynamic educator who has served as a cultural liaison, teacher, principal, Director of Elementary Education, and currently serves as the School District Superintendent of Baraboo schools. As an African American boy growing up in poverty, Rainey quickly learned how to advocate for himself and others and has carried that passion over into his daily work. Rainey obtained his degree from Edgewood College and wrote a dissertation on the Factors that Promote or Impeded the Success of African American Males in a Predominately White High School. Rainey strives to bring a voice to marginalized students and families. As a principal, he collaborated with staff and families to bring the motto “Every Kid, Every Day, Whatever It Takes” at the forefront of their school and a mission to live by daily.
